Radio masts & mine shafts

As some of you have already guessed, we’re on EE’s network! It was a much cheaper option than building our own network, but who knows what the future holds…

Ah that’s good news! I’m already on EE for my phone. Hopefully that might mean you’ll get access to 5G somewhere down the line?

The mast for EE/Three is less than 50m from my work which is usually convenient. It isn’t right now because they’re currently putting 5G equipment on there and they turn the entire mast off everytime they climb it and because it’s literally outside the door, we’re too far away from any other mast to get a signal!

Somewhere down the line is a good way to put it. 5G will be rolled out for users of the main networks first, then for MVNOs sometime later. Virgin Mobile began offering 4G about 4 years after their host, EE. How much of that delay was down to EE vs Virgin I don’t know.

It’ll also take a while for people to get 5G phone. Having just changed phone, which I hope will keep working for another 2 or 3 years by which time there’ll hopefully be a much bigger range of 5G phones at the midrange price points.

I suspect we’ll be getting to the stage where 3G is increasingly being turned off in some areas.

Given the “quality” of Virgin’s network a year ago when I tried it, I wouldn’t be surprised if the delay was due to them. It might be good to compare how long their other MVNOs took to get 4G.
